In 2000 and 2007 Francis Prendiville co-authored two drama books with his colleague Nigel Toye, at the University of Cumbria.
Drama and traditional story for the early years and Speaking and Listening through Drama 7–11 are both non-fiction and are intended to support teachers using drama in their teaching. They outline the philosophy of drama for learing and supply detailed and practical examples of drama in action for use in the classroom.
Drama and traditional story for the early years
by Francis Prendiville and Nigel Toye
Have you wanted to use drama more in your early years teaching?
This is a book that looks at how drama has its basis in good early years practice. Most early years practitioners are doing some drama and edging towards more structured work. This text will help them to go further because it is practical and accessible, offering 16 full dramas and more than 30 starting points from which to develop new dramas.
Speaking and Listening through Drama 7-11
by Francis Prendiville and Nigel Toye
This book focuses on how teachers can use drama to promote speaking and listening for pupils, including those who find learning difficult. Relating this to the important idea of Dialogic Teaching, it describes, analyses and teaches how to use role play effectively and looks at how to generate a productive dialogue between teachers and pupils that is both powerful and enabling. The authors present innovative methods for teaching across the curriculum, which are genuinely inclusive and can help to motivate reluctant learners.
‘At last! – a book on Speaking and Listening that guides teachers into ways of enriching communication in the classroom’. – Gavin Bolton, Reader Emeritus, University of Durham
